GDAP Block Preview Week: Day 8


Hi and welcome to a very very late GDAP Block preview. As with the day six post, I again forgot to give the card to be previewed to our guest writer.

In any case, you can expect his post tomorrow unless he wants to die a most horrible death.

So on to today’s preview. The card presented today is not exclusive to game development studios and is very common these days.

Retrenchment

Ah, retrenchment, the panic button of a lot of companies. As you can see on the card above, just by sacrificing your creatures, you’ll be able to gain 5 life thus preventing you from dying at zero life. The same can be said when laying off people. You cut expenses so that you can continue with your business. It’s that easy!

Or is it?

See, the labor law in the Philippines leans to the labor side (well technically leans in favor of labor). A lot of foreign investors are surprised on how protected Filipino employees are. DOLE won’t give you permit to do a retrenchment for just a couple of months in the red. My father who worked for Nabisco and was their labor union leader for some time told me that it took two years of loss before the company was granted permission for a retrenchment.

And let’s not forget a certain local airline retrenchment case where they were sued for not following the guidelines. It resulted to a lot of back pays, reinstatement, settlement that I’m sure a lot of companies would make sure that everything is in order before they retrench anyone.

So dear readers, do not treat this move lightly. I mean, you might have been lucky before that most of them wanted out anyway but that doesn’t happen everytime.
